When you build a large community in the high desert with a population
expected to peak someday at about a quarter million, there had better be
an awesome place for folks to take the kids swimming. A few years ago
the Cities of Saint George, Santa Clara, the Town of Ivins and the
Washington County
School District all got together and helped fund the Sand Hollow Aquatic
Center located at 1144 Lava Flow Drive, in Saint George. The
building’s unique roof design with two domes is the tell-tale landmark
for this incredible creation.
The center offers swim opportunities for both the leisure puddle
paddlers and the serious aquatic exercisers with its two pools. Open
every day but Sunday, the large capacity of the center can accommodate a
full schedule of water aerobics, arthritis water fitness, ‘noodle
power’, and aqua interval classes, as well as open swimming and time
set aside strictly for laps. Several other types of exercise classes in
the water are woven into this already busy schedule.
The leisure pool, which is 5,800 square feet in size, is an area set
aside for the kids and their families. Water slides and water toys are
abundant, and the pool is very safe for kids to either enter from the
‘beach approach’ end or by jumping off the edge once they have the
skills to dive and swim away from the walls. Of course, life guards are
stationed in many locations. Want to become a lifeguard? The center
offers a full course for that, as well as CPR classes.
Admission fees vary but are very affordable. One can pay for individual
visits, by lesson, by the half year, or on an annual basis. For more
information please call the Sand Hollow Aquatic Center at 435 634-5938.
