One of Southern Utah’s most spectacular natural phenomenons, the 3,730-acre expanse of coral and crimson color sand is a sight to behold. This pretty pearl of a park is located north of Kanab 12 miles off Highway 89 in Kane County. The sea of dunes attracts thousands of hikers, campers, photographers and off road vehicle operators annually. All but 265 set-aside acres of the park is open to ORVs such as ATVs and dune buggies. Vehicles must be properly registered and equipped with a whip-flag for visibility to other riders.
The unique architecture of the ever changing sand dunes is created by an activity known as the “Venturi Effect”. The Moquith and Moccasin mountains form a natural slot, between which the Coral Pink Sand Dunes restlessly lay. Prevailing winds whip through this gorgeous notch, carrying grains of sand in what seems to be a perpetual motion.
Many species of wildlife reside within the park such as mule deer, jackrabbits and cottontails, whip-tailed lizards, coyote and kit fox. There are 22 campsites, 14 days maximum stay. Winter activities include snow sledding and tobogganing on the snow- covered dunes. The park is about 6,000 feet above sea level. $5 day use; $14
overnight. Park office: 435 648-2800.
