Dixie National Forest is vast and mighty, covering a sensational area of nearly 2 million acres of southern Utah. The forest is managed as 5 Districts with the headquarters housed in Cedar City. It is the largest national recreation area in the State of Utah.
Among the hundreds of exciting outdoor activities available in the Dixie is camping. This is a great pastime for people of all ages and abilities. There are 26 developed campsites within the giant confines of the Forest. Thousands of eager campers take to the trees and rocky outcroppings each year for their experience with Mother Nature, so it is advisable to secure your reservations long before your intended adventure.
One of my favorites is the Honeycomb Rocks Camp which is located at the end of Forest Road 006 near the Enterprise Reservoirs a few miles southwest of Enterprise. Fishing is excellent in both reservoirs, and the hike up to Lost Peak is invigorating!
There are two very important things to remember about camping in the Dixie National Forest. One, do a little research on the particular campsite you want to set up in. Check to see what elevation it is at and if it’s accessible for the time of year you want to occupy it. And, two, there is very high risk of wildfire in most of the Dixie. Open campfires are not allowed in areas or sites that are not developed camping grounds. This includes the use of charcoal grills. Smoking is also allowed only in developed campsites, or in your vehicle and some buildings. Please be extremely careful with anything that can possibly cause a wildfire.
