Observation Point, Zion National Park

Observation Point, Zion Park

The hike to the top of Angels Landing in Zion National Park is one of the most awesome and hair-raising experiences you could ever hope to achieve in your lifetime. Now, imagine a climb almost double in elevation and at the end of the trail being able to look down upon Angels Landing! Such a trek exists on the Observation Point Trail in Zion National Park.

The hike starts out at the Weeping Rock Trailhead which is located near the end of Zion Canyon Scenic Drive just beyond the Zion Lodge. This is the road that prohibits private vehicular traffic from April through October (you must use the parks’ free shuttle bus service if you don’t want to walk or ride your bike up this road). The first few switchbacks beyond the Weeping Rock exit trail are long and steep. Pace yourself from the very beginning.

As you go along, the terrain changes dramatically, especially once you enter Echo Canyon.. Incredible views emerge that stay with you the entire time. Massive rock formations lay a base for high country forest growth and caverns that create life giving streams. This trail is strenuous and not for persons with fear of heights, particularly when you have just about reached the summit and are faced with the last few narrow switchbacks. A glance down is completely unnerving, but is one of the most incredible sites in all of Utah. Be very careful at the top. If your hat blows off with the wind and is headed for the rim, let it go!

For more information on this and other Zion trails go to www.nps.gov/zion
or call the park headquarters at 435 772-3256.
