Trail, Zion National Park |
Not all hikes in Zion National Park are nerve rattling or extreme (like the trail to Angels Landing or Observation Point). In fact, sightseeing at Zion can be done easily from car, bike or afoot in most areas of the park. A really awesome site to see is at the lookout atop the Overlook Canyon Trail, which will combine to make a wonderful adventure from car and trail.
After entering Zion Park from the Springdale entrance proceed to the intersection of the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive and the Mt. Carmel Highway and take the latter. Half of the year in Zion National Park you may only take this route by vehicle, as the Canyon Scenic Drive is inaccessible to private motor carrier.
The Mt. Carmel Highway takes you through several awe-inspiring switchbacks that lead to two tunnels, one much longer than the other. Just after exiting the second tunnel be prepared to swing into a small parking area on the right side. The stairs and trailhead for the Overlook Canyon is across the street.
This hike is rated moderate, meaning a well-groomed trail with railings where needed and fairly good footing underneath. The entire ascent of this hike is less than 200 feet. About 30 minutes will put you at the end of the trail and looking out over an incredible view of the canyon that you just motored through. In fact, the switchbacks you just traversed are plainly visible from here.
As with most descents from a vantage point, watch your footing on the way back down. The total experience should take about an hour, depending on how long you want to sit and enjoy the views. For more information call the park headquarters at
