For an awesome fishing experience for the whole family and a great drive through some pretty countryside, try the Upper and Lower Sand Cove Reservoirs. Both of these fishing holes are located within an easy 30 minutes of Saint George, and both bodies of water hold an incredible number of game and pan fish. Largemouth bass, trout, and crappies are the species caught most of the time, and the beauty is that you don’t have to launch a boat to reach the fish with your enticing offerings.
There are two ways to get to the reservoirs, one a little more scenic than the other, but they both work. You might drive north on Hwy 18 out of Saint George and, a mile and a half shy of
Veyo, turn left onto an unnamed road and go about another mile to Upper Sand Cove. The other way to try, a plan that will take you through some gorgeous countryside, is to head out of Ivins on old Hwy 91, past Shivwits on the Pauite Reservation, and then turn right once you reach the sign for Gunlock. Just past the
Gunlock Reservoir, which by the way is a third choice for your fishing day, is another unnamed road that you would take to the right to get to Lower Sand Cove Reservoir. The distance between reservoirs on this same road is about three miles. On your way out, simply take the other route to complete the circuit.
